4.2 million children live in poverty in the UK, with an estimated 2.5 million living in food insecure households. That’s why we’ve teamed up with FareShare, who provide vital food supplies to thousands of frontline charities supporting children and their families every week. Look out for specially designed packs in Tesco that help raise vital funds for FareShare this winter.
Who FareShare are
FareShare is the UK’s biggest food redistribution charity. It takes food from the food industry that can’t be sold in shops, either because of packaging errors or a short shelf life.
That food, which is the same as the food you’d eat at home, is then redistributed through a network of 11,000 frontline organisations, across the UK such as homeless hostels, school breakfast clubs, domestic violence refuges, older people’s lunch clubs, food banks and hospices.
Every week FareShare provides enough food to create almost a million meals for vulnerable people.
Food Collection & Tesco
The Food Collection is part of Tesco's ongoing effort to encourage customers to donate long life food to charity. Since their first collection in 2012, they have collected over 63 million meals. This includes customer donations as well as the 20% top-up from Tesco and food donated to their permanent food collection points.
FareShare joined Tesco in 2012 for their first food drive to 'help people in need'. Since then, Tesco shoppers have collected tonnes of long life items such as pasta and tinned goods to help frontline charities across the UK provide healthy balanced meals for vulnerable people.
